moving again
Just now I experienced another log on problem, so I decided to move. The new space address is 1tian.blog.com.cn
This might not be the last blog in this place, and I might come back from time to time, just as I will visit my other spaces from time to time. Before I vanish, I am going to say the following: 1. there was an earthquake in the UK, when I was in bed. I was very these days, so I didn't feel anything. 2. I've been to stonehenge last week. I cannot remember whether I have mentioned anything yet. Anyways, it was cold and windy, so if any of you would like to go recently, please wear more clothes. In addition, please wear a pair of gloves. 3. I've got problems to log onto hotmail and msn recently. I do hate microsoft! Poeple should use qq or other online chatting software. 4. tomorrow is the Leap Day, when traditionally women propose to their partners. I wonder how many friends of mine will be engaged tomorrow. 5. the astrology sign reading in the london paper is so irrelevant (or completely opposite) to my life. They should make up more appealing stories. 6. why is it so easy to climb up the parliment? I'd like to do that as well. However, I will not risk being arrested. 7. I realized that I was not able to spend all my salary on my food, which means that I can do more things. anyone fancy go kading?

Swim faster
Usually I am the slowest person in the pool, but yesterday I was one of the fastest. Isn't that strange? Maybe my techniques have been improved a lot.

A short trip to stonehenge
It's cold. There are a dozen of big blocks of stones and several wild birds. Stonehenge is really in the middle of nowhere. It was really windy and I could not feel my hands at one point. Last Saturday.

replacement bus service
Sometimes I think the quality of the DLR service is not too bad. However, as there are ongoing engineering work over the weekends for DLR these weeks, my life has been affected greatly. 1.Obviously, there aren't as many buses as trains. Hence, I have to wait much longer. 2.The bus drivers are not local (probably). I only took buses three time, but on two occasions the drivers didn't know the way. For the first time, I wasn't sure where to get off, so I asked the bus driver three times. Each time he told me my destination was still ahead, and apparently this wasted me about 20 minutes, as I should have got off at the first time I asked him. Today the bus driver drove us to a dead end and she had to turn around and drove back again. This cost me about 10 minutes. 3.I could not enjoy seeing the beautiful scenes through the bus windows, as I experienced car sick, or probably I should say bus sick. In general, I think drivers should not follow the cars in front so closely, as this could be dangerous and potentially lethal.

Work
As the big boss has left for settling in Zurich, the London office has been a little bit chaotic at the moment. The CTO, equity group MD and fixed income group MD had their rotations here as the head(s) of the London office. My small boss has become more and more relaxed recently, as he began to wear jeans everyday. On the other hand, some of my other team members start to wear ties everyday (probably because they want to impress the bosses.) Now, the CTO has become my big boss and one of the senior associates has become my middle boss. The new big boss asked me to stop my second project as he asked me to think about the big blueprint, whereas the middle boss gave me a couple of small projects to do, which requires no brain power but time consuming database checks. The problem about the our current database is huge. Most securities have different identifiers, but some securities may have the same identifiers with different countries of registration. This potentially can cause troubles. In addition, the data provided by the our data vendor could be wrong at the first place. What's worse? The data written through from the equity of fixed income database to our total fund database can be wrong due to some updates in either of the database. As there are so many potential errors, one-rule-fit-for-all policy will never work in reality. This caused great difficulty for me to check models using the data from our database. Today I just found a bug that was never been found by any of our clients or any member of our quality control team or any member of our client servicing team. I hope by the time I get back to office tomorrow morning, the bug will be fixed, and hence I can really start to do what I am supposed to do.

Yesterday when I was on a bus, I was thinking about the war memorial in London. There are plenty of war memorial status in the UK. Some of these wars were probably morally good, but what about the others where imperial royal army crushed all the armadas in other countries and took the colonies from other countries. Are those wars justifiable? Obiously the people in commonwealth countries may support those wars, as they have forgotten how British people brutally treated their ancesters. This is the adaptive rule of the nature. Using the same logic, let's think about the war memorials in Japan. If we agree with or do not object to the idea that people visit the UK memorial places, why should we strongly object to Japanese people's warship to their own war heroes? The difference is that Japan lost the second world war and the British empire won all those wars.

5th day of the new year
It's 23.51 on the fourth day of the new year. The only sounds I can hear at the moment are noise from fireworks. As I look out of my windows, I can see different colours everywhere, from ground to the high air, from the very far end of my sight to right in front of me, from south to north and from west to east. This is like watching a 3D movie, with the only scenes being different kinds of blusts of bombs. I can imagine the scene will be no more dramatic than this when Americans bombarded Bagladad. Why? It was said that people could welcome the God of Treasure to their homes if they displayed fireworks on 5th day of the new year. Of course, he should bring you wealth if he visits you. However, I have become a strong believer of hard working, so at the moment, I wish they stopped soon so that I can go to bed!

snow
heavy snow, huge loss, no water and no food for more than a week, no electricity for weeks, cold IT IS COLD! The funny thing about Chinese People's Army is that it seems to me that they are only there only for fighting against nature disaster. As China is far from being well equipped with advanced emergency rescue equipments, we need a huge army to form a human Great Wall to stop floods and protect residents from being washed away; we need them to shoot the ice hung down from the wires in the high air; we need them to clean the inches of snow on the roads so that other emergency team can send food and water to the trapped people; we need them to climb mountains while carrying heavy poles so that new electricity network can be built to restore power supply again. Can you imagine it takes 60 strong young soldiers 10 hours carrying one pole up a hill covered with inches of snow? How long will it take in order to fix the whole power supply network? Although we have a couple of million army, the nature has a much bigger force with much greater flexibility and we lost almost all the battles while we tried to keep our loss at a minimum. Probably we are able to achieve the goal to minimize the loss, but we cannot achieve the goal to minimize the country-wise economic loss. For example, as soon as the railway network started working again after the snow and ice was cleaned, the donated supplements were sent to the areas where they were affected most seriously by the snow. However, what will happen to the unused supplyments that will not be consumed after everything is restored to its normal condition?

Fireworks
Chinese people like displaying fireworks very much. They invented gunpowder for banboo cracker. It's a pity they didn't have science. Otherwise, Chinese people would invent fireworks a couple of thousand years ago. This year, however, the noise and air pollution caused by fireworks dropped substantially, as I was told by my uncles. A taxidriver told me he would not display fireworks any more but instead, he would drive more in order to earn more money. I thought the purpose of displaying fireworks was to scare the shit out of the demons and hopefully gods would give their blessings. On the other hand, Chinese people like "hot noise", which basically means that lots of people (friends and relatives) visit each other and as a result noise will be produced. Why? I have absolutely no idea, but I love it! Fireworks are hot and noisy, so people love them. The point the taxidriver made was that people began to understand gods are powerless and unreliable and that the only way to achieve something is to believe ourselves. Although I totally agree with him, I still love fireworks, as they are hot noisy. For those foreigners, as a precausion, you'd better not come to China at this time of the year, unless you want to have the feeling of being at a battle field. It was reported that in Beijing alone, there were several hundred million text messages sent on new year's eve. I can imagine there were billions of bombs displayed on that eve in China. My uncle has bought some of those bombs. However, he returned these dynamites back to the shop owner as it is too dangerous to play with them as an amertur and there have been some counted deaths. Of course, I believe it is really easy to do some modifications to change these fireworks to weapons of mass destruction, well, according to Bush's definition. I was imagining a world where every country had developed nuclear weapons and there was no effective defence system. Probably, the world would appear in equilibrium with no wars at all, as every governer is human being and by human nature they should be scared of death, which in turn should result in no offensive military orders. Right? Anyone who is no scared of death at all can never survive a political war or a physical war. This reminded me of the film "Assembly", which should be shown very soon in the UK. I just went to watch this movie in cinema this afternoon. War is crude and nobody wants to die, so if anyone can be killed by anyone else and there is no way to defend themselves to be killed, people are sensible enough not to start any stupid offensive attempts. Sorry that I talked about shit again. Back to fireworks again. I believe there are other reasons behind the seemingly reduced noice and air pollution in Shanghai. Although I cannot name all, I can at least name one: the fast expansion of Shanghai. As more and more poor people moving to the sububs, the number of poor people living in central Shanghai has reduced substaintially. Poor people tend to buy cheap fireworks, e.g. firecracker, which can cause more noise, though no optical attraction at all. On the other hand, more and more rich people buy flats and houses in central shanghai. Some of them let the flats out and the tenants have been very likely at home anywhere but shanghai. Others can afford huge fireworks, which can reach as high as hundreds of meters, but will not cause so much noise as firecrackers. I haven't come home for new year for 5 years. To be honest, I think it was noisy enough.

Post Card
I have learned to sleep standing up. I am the worst date ever. Coffee is a food group. My fashion sense is off. Guess who else is up late at night? No time to play anymore. My golf game is suffering. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Something is definitely true here, but I need to make some of the others true as well.
